Principles Shrink Options

I always thought that the world is big. That there are many countries to choose from if you ask yourself “Where to live?” The truth is: the world is actually very small. When you have certain criteria, the # of countries that qualify collapses from hundreds to only a handful of options. For example: if you believe in home-schooling, no legally required childhood vaccination, and you do like sunshine, only 7 countries will match this specific criteria. Of these, some are shitholes, which leaves you with 5 options. If you don’t want to live completely detached from society (in the jungle or on a remote island) then you have 3 options left. If you want to own property, there are 2 left: Portugal and Panama. If you don’t like the EU, Panama is the only option with its own downsides – or perhaps the best option is to get a medical exemption to make the USA your perhaps best option.

Have you ever defined what principles are truly important to you – and then matched where in the world these criteria are fulfilled? You will be surprised.

If you go completely legally, maybe — but there is a grey area in most of the countries where you’d like to stay. Nobody will take your kids for homeschooling or for not vaccinating them. There are many laws that, in practice, are not enforced because they’re obsolete and there’s no political will to change them.

For example, in Spain, you can homeschool without facing punishment if you never enroll the child in the public system. If you do enroll and then withdraw them, you may face some harassment, but the state has never won a homeschooling case.

If you’re a resident, nobody cares much — you may leave and return freely.

Regarding vaccines, nobody cares if you don’t vaccinate your kids. You can refuse. However, if you enroll them in the school system, then you may be required to vaccinate — but it’s not mandatory, and you can challenge it.

Yes, I agree fully! Spain in particular has this a gray zone for homeschooling, and vaccinations are not mandatory by law. Alternatively to those countries who have gray zones (Spain) or don’t really enforce existing laws (i.e. Southern Italy, Greece) I believe you will live more free in a country that has a little bit (not too much) of corruption. Which means 10 dollars can buy you personal freedom.
